Synopsis

Album Description
2008 two CD collection that brings together the material which Gladys recorded in her early career between 1961 and 1965, before joining Motown. Much of the material was recorded for the Bobby Robinson labels Fury and Enjoy, as well as the Vee-Jay label, with the later material recorded for Maxx, a label in which the burgeoning talent Van McCoy was closely involved. McCoy's influence can clearly be heard in the arrangements of the Maxx material, contrasting with the earlier Fury productions by Robinson with Marshall Seahorn. It includes the different versions, recorded for two different labels, of her first hit 'Every Beat Of My Heart', along with a version of the Don Covay song 'Come See About Me', and many great early Soul classics. This is about as definitive a view of Gladys Knight's pre-Motown career as it's possible to get, and is a thoroughly enjoyable insight into a great talent working in one of the most exciting eras of music. 48 tracks.
