CD Reviews

Contemporary house meets jazz funk and disco.

"With his Back in Brazil and Gilles Peterson in Africa mixes, it seemed like a while since he's really done anything closer to home, and closer to normal dance music trends. There was a lukewarm 2005 house mix for Mixmag magazine, but it's about time Gilles checks in with a superb outing of current house music. Disc 1 is full of funky vocal house and jazzed up selections, which Gilles seems to be an expert at selecting. The mixing runs smoothly, but the one down spot I found on this disc was the Sandy Rivera & Jose Burgos track This Will Change It, which features an incredibly long run of non-stop vocal repetition. At nearly 7 minutes of constant chorus, it really tempts you to hit the skip button. Other than that, this is a very solid house mix, and one of the best I've heard this year.

Disc 2 goes back to the past, with a mix consisting of nearly all 70's tracks. It's a lively jazz funk, soul, and disco mix, with some very interesting choices such as Space Bass by Slick, with it's futuristic lyrics, and the opener, We Gettin' Down, which quite possibly was the inspiration for A Tribe Called Quest's song Award Tour. There's also the well known Disco hit, Boogie Oogie Oogie by A Taste Of Honey.

Disc 3 is a collection of new, exclusive tracks commissioned by Gilles, which feature new house tracks with soulful male and female vocals. There really isn't a dull song on here. It features an interesting Carl Craig remix and a jazzed up Peterson edit of a Louie Vega track.

This 3 disc set well worth the asking price, as you're getting two superb mixes, one of new material, one of old, and one bonus collection of dozen new tracks. With 52 tracks and virtually no duds, this is a near perfect entry in the Defected In the House mix series."

"These 3 disks represent a lot of tunes. It just does not work for me. As a bit of Gilles fan his output seems to be too frequent and I wonder how much time he spends putting these things togther. Boring really ............. 1 of the discs os OK and the others are all over the shop."
