"the grandmaster grandfather of hip hop never sounded so good as on this collection of sweet, angry, powerful songs. herron is a man whose passionate, thoughtful lyrics are never sugar coated but wrapped in the sweetest sounds to ever bring a message for freedom, respect and dignity. it should be re-released imediately."
Gil Scott-Heron prior to 1985.

"A fine, albeit hard to find overview of Gil Scott Heron's career prior to 1985, "The Best of Gil Scott-Heron" is a decent introduction to the man and his work.
The album tracks Scott-Heron's evolution from his early days as an angry young man ("The Revolution Will Not Be Televised") to his reflections on the state of the world, whether on large scale ("Johannesburg") or small ("The Bottle") as well as political ("Re-Ron"). Along the way, he musically evolves from a stripped back jazz rock sound to more detailed, produced and funky sounds, drifting through jazz, blues, rock, Motown, funk and Bill Laswell-induced modernity. In the end, it covers quite a bit of ground.
Still, this is hard to get ahold of-- unless you have a reason to get it (and there may be one as some of the tracks are quite rare), this one should be passed on unless its price settle down."

"I LOVE this compilation of GSH and have been waiting to get the CD to replace my very worn album. It's been a year since I've discovered the album as being listed with Amazon but not available... It's that good. Start with the re-issue already!"
