CD Reviews

"Eu Tu Eles" gives a glimpse of unknown face of br. music
Christopher Niebylski | Brunswick, ME USA | 08/07/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This Soundtrack to the movie "Eu Tu Eles" (a real-life story of a woman in the Brazilian state of Ceara who has 3 husbands), offers listeners a type of music, famous in brazil, but little known by the outside world. For those who think that Brazil's music revolves around samba and pagode and axe beats, this CD will come as a pleasant surprise. For those already familiar with this style of music ("forro"-- a word originating from attempts of brazilians to say the english words "for all") this CD only serves to reassert Gil's greatness as a composer and singer. The lyrics are smart and reminiscent of many of the older forro songs, and the music itself is light, and a good music to dance to. For those interested in becoming acquainted with a very popular style of brazilian music, this CD is a wonderful way to begin."
A few corrections:

"If the lyrics are reminiscent of old-style Forro songs, as the previous reviewer says, it is because they are old forro songs! The majority of the songs are covers of old forro classics (mostly by Luiz Gonzaga). This is a good starting point for new listeners; new listeners might want to look at older records, by Luiz Gonzaga, to hear the originals of these songs later."
Exciting and moving.

"Gilberto Gil didn't write any of the songs, and only one song off the record is actually in the movie (and two during the credits), but man oh man, is this a fine record album. Many of these songs are famous and beloved by Brazilians young and old, and these performances in particular are FRESH and CLEAN! Gil's enthusiasm for music he is performing is always contagious, I can't stop listening to it! I really hope you buy it!"
