Chi se ne frega? Gianluca, che ci ha fatto un'altro mitico C

"IL RE DEL NIENTE (2005) is beautifully written and performed -- not a stinker on this CD -- all are catchy melodies with intelligent lyrics. There's something of a retro (70s) rock feel to it. The Beatles are an obvious influence, but you can say the same for 10K other musicians and it doesn't do justice to Gianluca's hook, which is very strong. The man can write, and does write, his own lyrics and melodies. I listened to RE at least 20 times in the first three days since my purchase. I took a risk and bought it before hearing any of the songs and I am really digging this album. Most of the songs here (as do most songs in any genre) lament bittersweet love. "Un giorno azzuro" is a favorite (but I love everything here). The last song on the CD, "Che ne sara' di noi", is the title song for a film by young actor/director Silvio Muccino (best known for his work in his brother Gabriele Muccino's films). The lyrics are all in Italian (and all printed on the fold-out cover insert, in Italian; they are also available on the official web site). From the title song:
Splendido niente di un uomo che cammina / un uomo in mezzo alla gente / Seguendo l'onda in questo mare di giorni / che ancora non mi affonda / Io che voglio e vivo una vita normale / Che me ne accorgo cercando qualcosa di speciale / Io che non esisto ma che non voglio morire / Sono il re del niente statemi a sentire...
Highly recommended for students of the Italian language (gotta love those idiomatic phrases!)
N.B. Purchase the 2006 version with the extra song, "Liberi di sognare"
P.S. general amazon.com tip: artist name search may bring up several hits for the same CD, all with different prices! -- then you can select the least expensive"
