"There's no need to persuade anyone that Tebaldi was one of greatest Toscas of her days and this live recording from Brussels is just another proof of that. It was very much one of HER roles. Di Stefano is in good form although not as good as when he was in studio with Callas. But honestly, It is Ettore Bastianini who should drag your attention: his only Scarpia available - and look - or hear - what he does!! - and he does some truly amazing things. Never before (or after) was Scarpia gifted with a voice of such velvety darkness, beauty, mighty masculinity and richness. Needless to say maestro Gavazzeni knew his job and did it in a great fashion!! Give this whole thing a listen, you won't regret!!"
