An often powerful folk recording

"While this music may not be for everyone (try some of the samples
and judge for yourself!) I find many of the gems on this album
to be very moving and powerful. Although this may be an
imperfect mirror into the musical traditions that existed
during the time of slavery, it is one of the best that we have."
Essential negro roots music

"Most all the ol' time negro folk song traditions are here: worksongs, reels, gospel, blues, etc., even body rhythms (eg, clapping)! It's emotionally compelling and, although a fairly modern recording, covers a wide swath of the negro music spectrum. A must for purists who still believe negro soul is still alive and 'out there'."
