"This CD is a welcome reissue of the Atlantic LP #1221 (1955), with some additional material recorded in 1991. George Wein, best known for starting (and running for many years) the Newport Jazz Festival, plays piano and sings in these wonderful recordings, accompanied by some of the best musicians ever, including Ruby Braff, Bobby Hackett, Warren Vache, Jr., Sammy Margolis, and Howard Alden. George shows that he is more than a jazz club owner, record producer, and pioneer festival producer (he virtually created the concept). He's most of all, and at heart, a musician - which is why all his other activities have worked so well over the years. This CD is a joy to listen to. I highly recommend it for anyone who likes the Great American Songbook, from an era when popular music was good music. (remember those days!) There is such magic in these performances - I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.I also highly recommend George's book, "Myself Among Others", recently released (Da Capo Press). He has spent a lifetime working with a virtual "Who's Who" of great jazz and folk musicians. It's quite a story. Those of us interested in this music, which is one of our greatest national heritages, should be greatful to George Wein for all he has done and the great contributions he has made.Kirby Allen - 1/25/04"
