Georg Solti, who was born in Budapest, was one of the most exceptional and productive conductors of the second half of the twentieth century and continued the tradition of the series of formative conductors which included the likes of Arthur Nikisch, Fritz Reiner, Ferenc Fricsay and George Szell. Charismatic Solti, whose fi ery temperament earned him the nickname desk demon , was an equally important and impressive fi gure on international opera and concert stages. Many of his recordings have become legendary in the meantime and belong to the essential productions that make up a record collection. These four CDs feature popular symphonies written by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Mendelssohn the recordings were made for the greater part during the 1950s.
