The Original Krupa Band Swings
Thomas Lucente | San Francisco, CA | 04/10/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)
"This radio recording, from early 1940, was made just two years after the famous Benny Goodman Orchestra concert at Carnegie Hall (in which Krupa was one of the King of Swing's many stars). While none of Krupa's sidemen are as well-known as their leader, they ably contribute to two swinging sets. Highlights include "Pyramid" and "Cherokee". The reissue, from the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors, is clean and bright. And, in a nice addition, the label even included the introductions of announcer Bill Abernathy, which sets the mood for each track. All and all, this CD should be a welcome addition to any serious Big Band lover's collection."
Two Complete Shows from Krupa!

"This CD is wonderous, in that, instead of excerpts of live recordings, it is two complete broadcasts on NBC. You will never hear the like of "Pyramid" from any other band, and the sound is exceptional for it's day. In addition to the many outstanding band selections, there is "Foo for Two", and the very beautiful "Bluebirds in the Moonlight." The sound is nicely balanced, and so are the selections.A must for any big band fan, as it's rare to find complete broadcasts of Gene Krupa!!"
