"Gene Harris would be best classified as a hard bopper with a funky touch. But whatever he and his group played, so much soul was infused into it that the result was always a consistently blues oriented groove. A good example of blues at its best can be heard on "Mysterioso".If you like something at a more brisk tempo, try "Strolling" or "Jeanine". His propensity for the blues overshadowed his fantastic touch with a ballad. "Till The Real Thing Comes Along" is excuciatingly beautiful. If you appreciate good jazz piano in a quartet setting, you will want this cd.......and more than likely most of his others on the Concord Jazz label."

"With tunes that have lasted from three to six decades and the pianist who can sustain the blues groove to no end, Gene Harris creates a masterpiece - "Like A Lover". Gene uses the quartet format with Ron Eschete (guitar), Luther Hughes (bass) and Harold Jones (drums) an expert in drawing out endings for a slow climactic effect.Harris has chosen ten of the most universal tunes to record, with such stand outs as - "MISTERIOSO" composed by Thelonious Monk, and Gene just sits back and plays the blues, that is simply infectious..."STROLLIN'" is simply melodic and a favorite Horace Silver composition with Gene..."WRAP YOUR TROUBLES IN DREAMS" a Bing Crosby hit, the quartet gives out with an upbeat workout that contains sedulously built variations.Concord Jazz spotlights one of the greatest jazz pianist ever - Mr. Gene Harris, listen as he plays America's favorite original music...Jazz, and see if you don't agree...this is the one for YOUR JAZZ COLLECTION!Total Time: 58:50 on 10 Tracks...Concord Jazz CCD-4526...(1992)"
