If Not Gene's Greatest Hits, Then Dang Close

"Although Roy Rogers was more popular, Gene was the first commercially successful and best of the singing cowboys. His recordings, movies and radio and TV shows are still entertaining today. The performances on this CD are from several decades past, but you'll hardly notice the ambient hiss from the stone-knives and bear skins era recording equipment. Gene recorded some of these songs several times for many different labels, but these performances (especially "You Are my Sunshine", "Mexicali Rose" and "Be Honest With Me") rank among his best.Whether you're looking for an introduction to early c/w music, or if you only want one CD to represent this commercial and popular icon (for most of the thirties, Gene Autry ranked second in popularity polls only to Shirley Temple, ahead of both Wayne and Gable) this is a great place to start."
