CD Reviews

IF YOU EVEN THINK YOU MIGHT LIKE BLACK METAL, BUY THIS!!!
Dancer of Life (dfm6@cornell.edu) | NYC and Ithaca, NY (Our oasis of PLUR in the blist | 07/29/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD is indeed, tremendous. Perfect amount of atmosphereand brutality; heaviness and musicality; nefariousness, sadness, andcampiness; innovation and good ol' black metal classicism; speed, mid-tempo, and slow dirge. Most importantly: one long evil orgasm. To all the wicked newjack kids out there: don't judge black metal by any one band (or any one album by that band, for that matter) bm comes in a great multitude of flavors. This CD is easily accessible for someone who may have been unable to comprehend Emperor, Immortal, and the like. GET IT! IF YOU LIKE METAL AT ALL, GET IT! (Don't take this stuph to seriously, either; I lost several years of productivity to satanism.) Peace!"

"You had best pick it up because it is an extremely rare find, as are most Gehenna albums. Wheather you like melodic death metal(Death,God Dethroned), black metal(Dimmu Borgir,Emperor), or progressive groups that strattle in between both catagories(Childern of Bodom,Soilwork,Dark Tranquillity), this is an album you should enjoy. The vocals are mostly monotonal rasps but for a small part of Vinterriket(Winter Realm) Sanrabb does clean singing and fits right in without ruining the song. A Myth is an eight minute epic track with an acoustic interlude followed immidiately by a melodic blast-beat-paced section. Sarcanna's keyboard playing is superb with out taking over the rest of the band. Even if the guitars sound fuzzy and take a few listens to get used to, it is still one of the greater ablbum in the genre. It certainly would be one of the better albums of the year if not THE album of the year. Gehenna's new works are lest melodic and more intuned to death/thrash styles, but they do have a little melody to them and are stll a good addition to any black metal rocker's collection. I eagerly await the future Gehenna releases!!!"
Middle of the road black metal done well
death metal and black metal | Austin, TX | 12/27/2001
(3 out of 5 stars)

"After their disturbed but Gothic and Romantic introductory album, "First Spell," Gehenna put out a middle-of-the-road black metal album that is both well done and easy to like, but not of the far-reaching implications that might make it enduring. Stylistically a synthesis of first-generation black metal into a mid-paced and moody arrangement, these songs are clear and passionate but often too granular to make the broader statements that marked the original burst of growth in black metal."
