Synopsis

Album Description
Some of the most powerful, energized, and memorable music of the U.K.'s potent post-punk era of the late '70s and early '80s came from the trailblazing band Gang of Four, and it all started with 1979's stellar Entertainment! Dave Allen, Hugo Burnham, Andy Gill, and Jon King fused punk, funk, explosive prog-rock, and literate and often incendiary lyrics into a signature, groundbreaking sound that would influence countless bands to come. The original album's brilliant 12 tracks are now remastered and bolstered with four tracks from the rare Yellow EP, plus four never-before-released-songs-making this watershed disc sound bigger and better than ever.

CD Reviews

Music that Defined a Time, a Genre, and a Band
J. C. Anderson | Los Altos, CA United States | 12/25/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"At a time and in a genre that had its share of bad music, the release of Gang of Four's "Entertainment!" was one of the highlights of punk rock's early days.

Sure, the politics expressed through the lyrics are a bit simplistic, but their sentiment, coupled with the compelling music (exemplified by Andy Gill on guitar and a great underlying beat), was perfect for someone, like me, in their early 20's and realizing that, hey, the world is actually a pretty f**ked up place.

"Entertainment!" was, in my opinion, Gang of Four's finest record, and as good as their later releases were, they never recaptured the same intensity found on this debut album (and I'm speaking of the song list of the original LP, not the CD with the additional tracks).

The songs still play well, even today, although they might sound a bit sparse to anyone familiar with today's Alternative Rock music. My personal favorite has always been (and remains) "Damaged Goods."

Take a listen, and don't forget...PLAY LOUD AND BOUNCE AROUND THE HOUSE !!"
