CD ReviewsBrazilian breath mints John W. Dunner | Atco, NJ United States | 03/19/2010 (3 out of 5 stars) "With an album title referencing her former band Beleza (whose three long-out-of-print releases -- Fantasia, Seven Days, and Tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim -- are nearly impossible to find), Anders offers up more Brazilian breath mints, spicy and cool. Overall, the album is very good, as Anders' half-whispered vocals heat most of the Portuguese tropical tunes. However, they don't fare as well on a couple ill-advised covers in English. Without the horns and backup vocals, Earth, Wind & Fire's "September" begins looping. And in the what-was-she-thinking category, Anders' ultra-lounge lunge at "I Can't Get No (Satisfaction)" rolls right over the Stones' rock and tries to plant a big wet one on Jagger's sneer. It doesn't work. No bossa, no beleza, no satisfaction. ***" Maybe the Best Bossa Nova Album Of 2009... dwood78 | Long Beach, CA USA | 02/03/2010 (5 out of 5 stars) "Last year, a number of bossa nova albums came out from the likes of Elaine Elias, Luciana Souza, Bebel Gilberto, & Diana Krall. All were disappointments to someone who enjoys Brazilian music.
Gabriela Anders' 3rd solo album is what a real bossa nova album should be: real upbeat songs like the cover of The Rollin Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" or the lite samba closer. I also enjoy how she gives new life into a number of bossa standards like "Agua De Beber" (giving it a hint of funk with the guitars), "Samba De Uma Nota So" or "Samba de Verão". As for ballads, check out how she turned an upbeat Earth, Wind, & Fire song into a wonderful, sexy, slow-moving bossa. Anders' penned "Fantasia" & "Dindi" round up the slow songs in this collection. Save "September," "Satisfaction," & "Sexy Ride," the songs are in Portuguese, or Spanish so this album probably won't get as much attention is those from the previously mentioned artists. Still, if you love bossa novas or Brazilian jazz, make sure you pick this up; you won't be disappointed." |
