These exciting works from young Handel's stay in Italy are the equal of anything he wrote, full of appealing solos and ingenious choral counterpoint. Graham O'Reilly performs them with small forces: 10 singers and 13 instruments. This has its advantages (clearly audible lower voices, quick tempos) and disadvantages (sometimes underpowered choral singing). The soprano soloists have done fine work in music composed for boys or young women, but the solos in these works (written for high-priced castrati) need a bit more vocal power than they can provide. The men are excellent. This is probably the best performance of these works available--but if EMI/Virgin reissues Andrew Parrott's Carmelite Vespers reconstruction, pounce on it. --Matthew Westphal
