Palestrina recordings are relatively plentiful but it's usually the same handful of works that get programmed, often appearing in routine, "let's do Palestrina" performances. The Tallis Scholars never leave you in doubt as to their intentions--whether it's regarding tone quality, phrasing, ensemble balance, dynamics, tempo, or any aspect of interpretation. This takes a great deal of detail work, which few ensembles have enough time to do. But it really shows in performances such as this--an affecting and technically impressive rendering of one of Palestrina's late masterpieces, the Missa Assumpta est Maria. Much of the ensemble's success here lies in the uniform tone quality and in the balance among the voice parts--distinct lines in the polyphonic sections, and perfectly weighted chords in homophonic passages. Performances of Palestrina rarely get better than this, and chances are, if they do, it's the Tallis Scholars outdoing themselves. --David Vernier

Two Wonderful Masses
NotATameLion | Michigan | 08/01/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This recording, which contains two of the most beautiful (though very different) Masses ever written, is probably one of the fifteen or so recordings that I listen to most frequently. I love this music.Missa Assumpta est Maria in caelum is invigorating; flowing with an almost lilting lyricism. It is one of Palestrina's later works and showcases his skill and precision in composition. The Tallis Scholars sing the piece beautifully. The recording is bright, energetic, and uplifting.Missa Sicut lilium inter spinas is every bit as expressive as Missa Assumpta est Maria in caelum; but in a more reflective, almost meditative way. The phrases are lovingly repeated and given time to express the inner beauty of the subject. It contains what is probably my favorite Agnus Dei; which builds and swells with a quiet sense that I can only characterize as pure contemplation. While it is true that I have a weak spot when it comes to the Tallis Scholars, (I have yet to hear an album of theirs that I do not like) let me, in all sincerity, recommend this recording to you. It is wonderful."
