"I came across this whilst looking for contemporary free/avant garde jazz googling and i think it was NPR.Ever since David Lynchs Lost highway when Bil Pullmans character loses the plot sort of at his jazz club, I thought, I want something really crazy like that. Just wild free form that experesses some unplayable, unknowable resistant-to-be expressed idea. well i think this album is that. I dont know what broetzman is trying to get out, but we have all felt it. His playing kind of like drawing somehow. I would call it minimal metal jazz because I don't know how to describe it at all. However, this is not metal at all. I said that for atmospherics. There is some kind of chaos structure to the more coherent peices(NOT that this is an incoherent album at all) plus some pretty free stuff to. But the drumming is the rumbling ocean that keeps this thing going. Its almost circa And Justice for All metallica,prduction wise, but not easily catagorizable. Well, i love production and thats what it reminded me of. Bass player is great and anchors the whole thing with the drummer freeing up the sax/clarinet of Broetzmann. This album also has much quieter peices than you may be imagining but they too are great. If you want something really new sounding and want to appreciate your new ECM record then this futuristic idea of jazz is what you should play first. Great Album. Great minimal Artwork too."
