The epitome of "back in the day" hiphop
01/27/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)
"Artists have always tried to capitalize on the popularity of "retro" or "throwback" melodies in modern works, hoping to cash in on the nostalgia, campiness, or similar incentives. What they often lack is an actual appreciation and command of the musical style, and end up sounding like remixing hacks. The Freestylers (or if you prefer, Cut & Paste) are not such hacks. Climb in the the "way way back machine", kid, this is a trip to the past with the edge of today's DJ skills. The blend of beats and melodies on this particular "old school" compilation is similar to that Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) and the like coming out of the UK en force, but the Freestylers seem to wrap it all in a tone of pure enjoyment and good spirits, never trying to prove they have the most eccelctic tastes, but rather trying to put together a series of memorable (and sometimes overlooked) classic breakbeat, hiphop, funk and urban beats of the past, as well as a few contemporary pieces that carry on the traditions laid down in the era of "Beat Street" and "Breakin'".So strap on the fat laces and work on your windmill technique - it's deja vu all over again."
