"Audio quality on THE CHRONOLOGICAL FREDDIE MITCHELL 1949-1950 is generally flawless. Exceptions are lower fidelity on tracks 3, 4, 7 and surface hiss on 20. Included is an eight-page booklet that provides some session data.
Freddie Mitchell pioneered the rug-cuttin' honkin' sax R&B that in the mid 1950s easily transitioned to rock & roll. It's said that personality-wise, Mitchell was a literal Jekyll & Hyde; his high-energy stage behavior being totally opposite the shy man he was in everyday life.
Between 1940 and '46, Freddie blew reeds in the orchestras of Benny Carter, Fletcher Henderson and Ovie Alston, cutting records with all these. In 1949, he was invited to assemble an R&B band for the DERBY label. The examples on this CD from those sessions include five accredited Mitchell compositions: "Doby's Boogie," "Hog Head," "Freddie's Calypso" (duplicated in track 11 as "I Told You We Were Through"), "Rockin' With Coop" and "Fish Market Boogie."
Two songs here charted. "Doby's Boogie," dedicated to Larry Doby, the first black on the Cleveland Indians and in the American League, reached #4 on Billboard's R&B chart in 1949. Freddie's jump version of "Easter Parade" peaked at #7.
