"I heard Frank Huang perform in Escondido, California in May 2005. I was impressed by his technique, but more even impressed by the maturity with which this very young vioinist played sonatas by Prokofiev and Ravel. I immediately bought this CD, recorded about three years earlier.
I'm a big fan of Schubert masterpieces like the Quintet in C, so I'm sorry to say that the Fantasy included here is a pretty insipid and tedious work, and at 24:45 in this performance it's easy to see why, as the liner notes point out, people walked out during its 1828 premiere.
The Ernst is a fun, unpretentious Paganini-esque work. The Schoenberg is a real modern delight. Huang, with his alternatively smooth, ethereal, or dark tone, and fleet-fingered accompanist Dina Vainstein play it with authority. The Waxman Fantasy rounds out the group nicely. So three out of four ain't bad for a disc so reasonably priced, and Frank, if you're reading this, I'm eagerly waiting for your next recording to come out."
