"The last truly spectacular cd that had a hardcore sound to it, that had if not mass appeal then certainly appealed to fans beyond the tight hardcore scene, was for me, The Satellite Years.
It was heavy, it was melodic, but it had that special, unique X factor that made it stand out and connect with different types of music fans.
Ive waited a long time for a new album to make an impact on me like TSY did, and this is it.
Dance Pretend Forget Defend is a hugely diverse, epic and ambitious piece of work. The vocals alternate between ferocious screaming and clean singing, and the guitars constantly switch from moshy chugging to melodic fret-wanking solos, topped off with elelctronic flourishes and violin and cell accomponiments.
I guess that sounds complicated and it is, but this melting pot of sounds works really well. They also use a female singer to add even more dynamics, sometimes in the background over the main screaming and sometimes on her own.
I think i would compare FDLS to a less dramatic From Autumn to Ashes, minus FATA's penchant for Maiden style guitar harmonics. Im not a huge fan of FATA, theyre ok but thats it, so FDLS are not hugely similar to them, just in case you hate that band.
Im rambling, but i hope you get the picture
Any way, to some up, this is a very very good, modern-sounding hardcore album. There sre some excellent pretty-sounding instrumental pieces, such as the opening and closing tracks, and the artwork is nicely done too.
Recommended for fans of bands like Shai Hulud, Poison the well, FATA .hopesfall. and the like, basically bands that are or have grown up on the scene but arent afraid to add their own individual touches.
This band need your support, they have the potential to go stellar, and most importantly, they *deserve* too.
