CD Reviews

If you're a fan of the Bay Area thrash metal scene
George Dionne | Cape Cod, MA | 05/22/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"What's good about it? If your name is Force of Evil, it only makes sense that you have a song titled "Hell on Earth." This track is loaded with meaty riffs and vocals that would make Rob Halford proud. "Mindbreaker" is equally as punishing with its quick, high-pitched licks and back and forth pentatonic soloing. Shermann and Denner keep this up throughout the disc. What better night to celebrate the evil one than on Halloween? "Samhain," which is the Pagan word for Halloween, has plenty of dark and evil overtones. Steene's vocals are at their sinister peak here. The frantic solo makes you feel like your descending into the fiery pit of hell. Force of Evil summons the devil on "The Calling." This fast paced track is their battle cry. And if summoning the devil isn't enough, the birth of Satan's spawn is addressed on "Demonized." The long instrumental opening is sure to elicit memories of this band's past work. Anything bad? We get it. You're evil! Bottom Line Yeah, Force of Evil reeks of classic eighties metal clichés, from the musical structure to the cover art, and right down to the song titles. You have to hand it to these guys for staying true to their sound. If you're a fan of the Bay Area thrash metal scene, you're sure to like Force of Evil."
CLASSIC

"It's simple, really. Two of the most influential musicians of our era....now reunited. They make metal like Tipton and Downing, Iommi and Butler, Harris, Murray and Smith, Lulis and Boltendahl, Blackmore and Gillan....the list goes on. To make it it short; if you like classic "heavy metal" you *will* like this. I recommend 'Fountain of Grace' and 'Eternity' amongst the all the other killer tracks. Just sit back and listen to the solos and fills. These guys know their chops."

"Originally posted on The Metal Circus:Former Mercyful Fate dual lead guitar players Shermann & Denner are back in action with a group that will definately impress the fans of King Diamond and Mercyful Fate. The band is called 'Force Of Evil' and their self-titled release has yet to leave my CD player. I think I have had 5 full listens already. All members with the exception of vocalist Steene were associated with Mercyful Fate or King Diamond at one point in their career. I feel this is what makes the group have a very Fate-like musical quality. I think that it would be hard to avoid this sound with the dual shredding of the Fate axemen. However do not anticipate that Steene sounds like King Diamond for he does not. He is a great metal singer just the same yet has more in common with Joey Belladonna than King if one were to form a quick comparison of vocal style. In all honesty this is better for the group in that if Steene sounded exactly like Diamond he would risk being called a copy cat.Notable tracks include 'Hell On Earth' & 'Mindbreaker' with quick tempos and great rhythm. It did not take me long to have these at the most played numbers. Slower numbers such as 'Eye Of The Storm' & 'Misery Man' roll along with a solid heavy grind. While 'The Calling' is a thunderous piece that uses the bands title in it as it rumbles through the stereo. The group has begun touring and according to press releases they will be issuing a live DVD in March. Since the band is so new I would hope to hear some classic Fate in their set. Whether their live show will be as theatrical as that of King Diamond remains to be seen but I do advise the Fate/Diamond fanbase to snare a copy of this as it is quality metal. I am sure this will be a great band to see live. At present I am unaware of any US tour plans as their site shows mostly Europe(...)."
