Arriving from the same fertile California region that spawned Pavement and Grandaddy, Modesto's Fiver clearly have geography working in their favor. On the group's third album, Here It Comes, the fluid melodies and frazzled rhythms also found on their first two outings--Strings for Satellites and Eventually Something Cool Will Happen (produced by Grandaddy's Jason Lytle)--flow into something truly exceptional. Emphasizing soft psychedelic edges and a fearless experimental streak, the six-person collective gatecrashes the same hallowed space occupied by astral artists like Built to Spill and Spiritualized, turning out an album that is at once remarkably creative and unequivocally poignant. --Aidin Vaziri
