CD ReviewsAwakening Andreas Faust | Tasmanian Autonomous Zone | 12/28/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "'Birdking' is the most musically proficient of Fire + Ice's five albums proper, partly perhaps because of the wide cast of musicians. There are some powerful pieces here, like 'Dragons in the Sunset', 'Birdking' and 'The Lady of the Vanir', the latter a deeply moving tribute to Freyja, with lyrics by Alice Karlsdottir of Texas. 'The Lady of the Vanir' is true heathen religious music (as opposed to picturesque folk), and those without religious feelings will not be able to fully appreciate it. Another noteworthy song is 'Where Have They Gone?', a haunting elegy for the strong, proud and free Anglo-Saxons...what would their ghosts think if they could see the current state of England?
Ian Read dedicates this album to "the Birdking, whose awakening I strive for." I, too, have felt the presence of the Birdking (although I never knew his name before Read gave voice to it), and perhaps you will feel it too after listening to this album." |
