Impressive and innovative extreme metal

"Aion is the second release from Italian extreme metal band Figure of Six. The band's sound is not easy to classify, as it swerves between melodic death metal, metalcore, and modern thrash, and features a fair amount of industrial/electronic/atmospheric elements. It's generally somewhere between Soilwork and the Haunted, with bits of Darkest Hour and Strapping Young Lad.
The interplay between harsh vocals and melodic clean vocal passages isn't anything new, but given how predictable Soilwork and the Haunted have been lately, the way Figure of Six shakes things up is a breath of fresh air. They definitely value speed and aggression above all else, so this is a completely heavy, blisteringly fast album despite the deceptively tranquil keyboard elements that are woven throughout. I love the intensity, the creativity, and the sheer ferocity on display here; and unlike the latest Soilwork album Aion makes me want to push my speakers to the limit and scream along until I pass out.
It's not for everybody, but open-minded metal fans, especially those who prefer bands on the extreme end of the spectrum, should definitely check out Figure of Six. They're anything but predictable (and I bet they're insane live).
