Something about ambient trip-hop music lends itself to a female lead vocal. Perhaps it's how an airy feminine melody contrasts so well with the tickle of the deep bass line. Or maybe bands like Massive Attack and Portishea... more »d have set up a template that other artists lack the imagination to significantly alter. Regardless, the combination has spurred a subgenre of sorts, and, as the music on this compilation record makes clear, there are gems to be found among the knock-offs and half-baked tunes. This is after-dark music, and none of these bands makes dreamier use of tempo and repetition than Laika, who kick off the disc with "Uneasy," off 2000's Good Looking Blues release. Another band doing this better than most is Lamb, and the track used here, "Lusty" (off their amazing self-titled debut), is a study in bold creativity and assertive rhythms. The disc sags towards the middle, getting mired in pseudo-mystical lyrics and by-the-numbers execution, but recovers nicely with the blissful epic "Parallel Life" from the Starseeds. With compelling work from import-only bands like Crustation, Kiwiwest, and Mandalay included as well, the record is an ideal primer in female trip-hop ("chick-hop" perhaps?) music. --Matthew Cooke« less

"A compilation is a tricky beast, a delicate balance. And buying one where you already have about half the songs on their original CDs maybe isn't that smart. But I was hoping to get turned on to something I didn't already have. Sadly, I was not. All the usuals are represented and it's nice to have them all in one place. There are some she's that weren't on there.....No Alpha, no Soma Sonic, no Morcheeba, no Supreme Beings of Leisure, no Esthero....the list goes on. There are several bands I have never heard of and probably won't go out and seek more of. But it's a nice CD, just not definitive."

"This is a truely wonderfull CD. It has tracks from many already established well known bands like Laika and Lamb, and if you are into trip hop you will probably already have these songs in your collection, but the best material on here is the new up and coming bands like Bitstream Dream and Kikiwest who both have gone the indie route on mp3.com, but do some of the slickest trip hop i have ever heard. It's worth a purchase, even if only for tracks 3, 5, and 10."

"I knew after the first song this CD was a winner. If you like Portishead and Soma Sonic your going to love "She: A Female Trip-Hop Experience". This is a CD that you can sit back and groove to, while sipping on a glass of Merlot. You will be grooven in your house, but you will be feeling like your in that upscale lounge. Don't hesitate, this is one for the collection!!!!"

"being a devoted fan of trip-hop, i could not hesitate to get this album and i must say it didn't disappoint me at all! it does get slower on the second half but that doesn't interfere with its quality... it's great, even my mom likes it!"
