CD Reviews

Good Compilation!

"I reviewed this a few years ago, and just looked it up again to see if there was ever a sequel (there isn't). This is actually the same as the one found under the heading: "Pure Brazilliance", I can tell because the label is "Fuego", which was strange since the group that mixed this was Faze Action who are legendary Germany's "Compost" label which features Rainer Truby, Truby Trio, Jazzanova, Minus 8, Koop, Kyoto Jazz Massive, etc.Having given some of those names, you know what to expect from this nu-Brazil cd that came out in 2001. Featured are legendary US jazz act Fertile Ground, Bebel Gilberto, Fauna Flash, Victor Davies, Russ Gabriel, Marcos Valle, S-Tone Inc. and a few other terrific musicians and groups. This is a mixed cd which starts out with a pretty cool electric samba before going into what was my favorite remix of Bebel Gilberto's "Sem Contencao". But the real gem on this cd to me is Russ Gabriel's "Supermarket". It's so incredibly nostalgic - it'll take you to a summer night where the weather is perfect and you're remember good summers in the past. The way the keyboard and guitar is played is breathtaking to me. The other fantastic cut was S-Tone Inc's "La Boca Del Rio". At the time of this cd, it was only available as a vinyl track and not included in their previous "Free Spirit" album. This was the first time I'd heard it and fell for it's infectuous beat and rythm.I highly recommend this cd. This'll certainly get you energized for the evening and althoug there are only 12 cuts, the shortest song clocks in at a hair under 5 minutes! So this isn't like a radio edit hack job. The only downsides that I can think of was that the mixing wasn't always natural sounding, and not all of the cuts got me. ("Sick of Dancing" was actually the longest and most annoying IMO, and is the song that SHOULD'VE been hacked down) But there was some great star-power here, and of all the nu-brazil cd's out at the time this one definitely stood out to me. If you liked this, then check out Break N' Bossa vol 4 & 5, and look into the Nova Latino compilations (there are 3 of them now)."
