"Faure is an oft-overlooked composer of not inconsiderable talents. This CD contains two of his finest works, his Cantique de Jean Racine and his Requiem. The Cantique is a short but stunning piece, set for SATB choir and accompaniment. The power of the music in the Cantique is amazing. From the opening, the bass voices lead the piece, and offer not only a strong base for the music but carry the melody on more than one occasion. I had a chance to perform this piece with a choir a year or two ago, and it was one of the best musical experiences I've ever had. As for the Requiem, it is equally stunning. The opening movement is delicious in it's varying intensity, while the later movements allow solo voices to shine. I'm a particular fan of the Libera Me bass solo."
