"I guess with such a rigorous concert and touring schedule there is little time left for recording sessions. In my opinion making the N.Y. Philharmonic one of the great least recorded orchestras in the world. I don't usually go for the type of excerpt program laid out on this disc. Three years into Kurt Masur's contract(1994)they recorded this 60 plus minute Tchaikovsky waltz album, live! I assume this was made in conjuction with an Avery Fisher Hall performance. The engineers give us a spacious recording with concert hall presence. The sweet music makes it all the more attractive. Taking this as a whole it is interesting how Viennese the waltzes sound as to make you forget you are not listening to Strauss. For a sophisticated well played mood record, this is tops! Eleven years after it's release you can own a modern N.Y.Philharmonic
record(the type that Bernstein use to make) for less than the price of some budget issue with similar program."
