"This is not just jazz, this is something else entirely. Erroll Garner is one of my favorite jazz pianist. He takes each piece, whether it is a standard or original composition and "plays" with it. He has a certain style that is utterly light-hearted and charming and also quite dazzling. He takes, for example, Irving Berlin's classic "Always" and goes into some exquisite variations that are quite beautiful. In his own "Afternoon of an Elf" he paints a picture of a little elf walking along the forest in a happy mood. Of all the recordings I own of Erroll Garner, I like this one the best because it is Garner solo. There is no rhythm section, but rather Garner pure and simple creating his own imaginative worlds, and we the audience are lucky enough to step in and share in the journey."
