Synopsis
Amazon.com Erroll Garner brought a totally original concept of piano-playing to jazz. The self-taught Garner was virtuosic without being too flashy, and evoked gorgeous sentiment without becoming lachrymose. His eccentric two-handed approach was not particularly influential, but it was wildly popular. Garner loved to put his own stamp on standards, but he was also a handy writer, composing the well-known hit "Misty." That track is included in these recordings, made between 1950 and 1957 with several different trio lineups, including the group with Eddie Calhoun on bass and Denzil Best on drums that recorded the popular 1956 live recording Concert by the Sea. --John Swenson Similar CDs

CD ReviewsErrol garner is a true jazz artist J. R. Bakerink | 08/07/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "errol garner is clearly one of the top early jazz artists. His music is highly sophisticated yet he plays on the piano as a child wishes to play it. He has a child in him that is played through the piano. You can tell through his music that he is happy and is an optimist. As a self-trained pianist, Errol Gargner was a genius clearly born for the piano." A Joy To Listen To J. R. Bakerink | 06/27/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "Too bad the truly greats have to die at such an early age. EG was truly great with an immediately recognizable style which was totally different than any other jazz pianists. A joy to listen to. " What a piano player! Marilia Braga | USA | 04/12/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "Even though the jazz world seems to have forgotten him, I rate Erroll Garner as one of the best piano players in jazz. His "Misty" is a classic, and no one has surpassed him in this interpretation."
