Hauntingly lyrical and deeply romantic

"Herrmann seized upon the seaside setting of this film to create a score that alternates between lyric romanticism and majestic panorama. Herrmann was fond of Vaughan Williams and he truly pays homage to that composer with this score. It was written after his work with Welles but before his work with Hitchcock, and shows how deep the strains of Romanticism ran through him. An exquisite performance of one of the maestro's greatest artistic achievements."

"I found this recording of Bernard Herrmann's score being sold used and I couldn't afford the soundtrack, so I bought this. I don't care if there are certain pieces missing from this, I think that it is the best version of the score that I've heard. Elmer Bernstein must really study Herrmann's music because he has made dozens of recordings of his films. I'm planning to get the original soundtrack sometime, but when I do, I won't get rid of this cd. It's is nice to hear a different composer's version of other composers' scores"
