CD Reviews

The very first and must-have album by Elis Regina

"
When Elis Regina was recognized as a great vocal master of Brazilian music, she had already recorded 4 albums with commercial music. She could not choose her repertoire at that time.

Since she was chosen to sing "Arrastao", the beautiful song by famous Edu Lobo, in a Music Festival, things had really changed for her. She was awarded the best vocal performance while the song was awarded as the best one in the Festival contest.

It was a smash hit, her first one. She had then signed with Philips/Polygram Records and her first disc was a single with "Arrastao", the version you will find as a bonus track in this CD.

Elis Regina has always rejected all her output before Philips Records so that she considered her first album this "Samba Eu Canto Assim", a splendid showcase which features her in her best with the best arrangers and musicians in the area. Every and each musician in Brazil had a dream at that time: to play in Elis Regina's records.

Here you'll find jazzy ensembles and string orchestra arrangements. Her smash hit "Menino das Laranjas" comes from this album. Also features a piano-voice rendition of Marcos Valle's "Preciso Aprender a Ser Só" with Dom Salvador at the piano. A must-have."

"This is one of Elis Regina's earliest albums, released when Elis was about 20 years old. The depth and maturity of her voice is obvious on this CD and while the songs don't remotely resemble samba, they're great jazzy little ditties from the 60s. If you're a fan of Brazilian music or of jazz in general, you would probably like this. My personal favorites are Menino Das Laranjas, a peppy little jazzy number, and Joao Valentao, which really shows off Elis's terrific voice."
