Synopsis

Album Description
Eleni Karaindrou's music for Theo Angelopoulos's new movie, Dust of Time starring Willem Dafoe, Irène Jacob and Michel Piccoli which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. Often Karaindrou's music plays a decisive role in shaping the emotional climate of the films she serves - Dust of Time is the eighth Angelopoulos film to feature her music. Yet the strength of Karaindrou's compositions is such that they stand beautifully by themselves, and each of her albums reveals an unmistakable autonomy. Dust of Time produced by Manfred Eicher in Athens, has a special, gentle and intimate character, with violin, harp, cello, oboe and accordion given central roles.

CD Reviews

A beautiful and original sound
Dominique Elliott | Savannah, GA USA | 02/14/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Eleni Karaindrou is to Angelopoulos what Nino Rota was to Federico Fellini.

Angelopoulos is probably one of the most underrated filmmakers of the past 15 years. His films are intelligent and favor mise-en-scene and long takes over the choppy self-conscious editing so prominent in our culture.

Karaindrou's soundtracks are as sensitive and evocative as they are timeless. She clearly has found a very personal sound through the combination of cello, harp, oboe, accordion and piano (played by Karaindrou herself.) The themes are as contemplative as Angelopoulos' films. Dust of Time has some clear moments of romanticism and nostalgia, they even seem Proustian at times in their reminiscent tone. Anyone who has experienced homesickness, no matter the context, will find a connection with Karaindrou's music. A beautiful and evocative sound.
