CD Reviews

Mike Bloomfield's in the line-up in this rare live recording
07/25/1999
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This "live" performance by the Electric Flag sounds like a bootleg recording; probably made in 1968, with Mike Bloomfield, Buddy Miles, and perhaps the rest of the "original" line-up (Goldberg, Gravenites, Brooks, et al.); it has been packaged under titles such as "Greatest Hits of ..." and so on; "I Should Have Left Her" is a version of "Killin" Floor" from their studio lp, "A Long time Comin'," and two other songs are live renditions of songs from that studio lp; several of the songs, sung by Miles, are what may be called r&b ballads; it's hard to tell if all of the songs are live, though; while the sound quality is only fair, it's great to hear Bloomfield, et al. live - although there's not a lot of Bloomfield letting loose; assuming that this is a bootleg, be aware that the "bootlegger" was in close proximity to the keyboardist (probably Barry Goldberg); nevertheless, it's a wonderful, rare snapshot of another '60s band with a lot of potential, but which crashed and burned instead; wonder if anyone is still alive who could provide more definite information on this recording?"
