Synopsis

Album Description
Yola is available in "Super Audio" format compatible with SACD and CD players. Eleanor explains what Yola means : "the journey brought us to South Wexford, a strange, flat, uncompromising landscape of often high winds and driving rain, and sometimes, huge and beautiful skies. A land cut off by ocean, sea and for centuries by culture. So isolated for so long, that from the time of early invasion, it kept and developed its own dialect, a tangent of old and middle English mixed with anglicised Irish. This dialect, now extinct apart from a few words still in use, was called Yola." ?Yola? (Market Square; MSMSACD113) was produced by Eleanor and her pianist Brian Connor with co writing credits going to Lloyd Cole and Henry Priestman (The Christians). An album of songs that are allowed to fend for themselves with a musical but uncluttered background brought about by the stylish playing of Liam Bradley on percussion, Eoghan O'Neil on bass and Brian Connor on piano. In January, Eleanor had her first child ? Sara Jane. In March, she visited the UK for a week to undertake live and recorded interview for BBC national and regional radio. Eleanor is undertaking select dates in the UK in June accompanied by Brian Connor.

"I don't know if Eleanor McEvoy is in touch with her feelings. She's certainly in touch with mine. Anyone who listens even casually to the words on Eleanor's album "Yola" is sure to find an emotional connection there. Listen closely, and you may wonder if she's been tapping your phone or reading your diary. But no, I suspect the real truth is simply that Eleanor has the soul of a poet wrapped in the body of an incredibily talented singer-songwriter, and the combined package is hard to beat. The music is simply, but elegantly arranged, backing Eleanor's compelling vocals with her own guitar and fiddle licks, co-producer Brian Connor's keyboards, Liam Bradley's percussion and backing vocals, and Eoghan O'Neill's bass."

"This folk/pop album is engaging, original, and emotionally bright. In other words, it's emotional, but most of the emotions it brings out are good ones.Eleanor McEvoy has a likable voice and the lyrics are easy to relate to. It opens with a song that'll have you bouncing along in your car with a smile. Then just a few songs later, we get a great "I can't believe I've just been dumped" song. You can't appreciate it until you hear how she expresses the words, but some of the lyrics are -- "Now you want rid of me -- you've gotta be kidding me -- don't you think I want rid of you?" Somehow, she brings a smile to your face even when she's singing about something that annoyed her.A great album for keeping your perspective breezy! Very catchy and lyrical."
