"This 1983 studio date, recorded in Copenhagen, was one of Lockjaw's last recordings, and it's a beauty. Very early in his career Eddie developed a gruff tenor sound that became instantly recognizable whenever he played, and that sound is in full force here. Countering Lockjaw's gruffness is pianist Kenny Drew's lyricism, heard to great advantage on the slow introduction to FUNKY FLUKE. Davis plays a gorgeous ballad version of THAT'S ALL, and his spunky interpretation of the modern classic FOUR is terrific. The entire group here is in great form throughout, but Lockjaw is particularly fine. Lockjaw Davis fans will be pleased with this CD, for sure.
