CD ReviewsA Palmieri Smoker!!! Canuco | New York City | 03/22/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "Here is an outstanding album by Eddie Palmieri & La Perfecta, a total smoker front to back. Recorded in 1970, Palmieri topped himself (hard to do even for him) with Super Imposition. This album is known and revered by all Latin musicians. The opening track, "La Malanga" is a hard swinger with Quintana's vocals leaping effortlessly thru some heated brass exchanges. "Pa' Huele" a classic tune composed by Fiffe is done with class and is beautifully executed. "Bilongo", a son montuno for some serious dancing, is magical, everyone plays relaxed and swings the tune with just the right amount of heat. Chocolate Armenteros a master trumpetman takes an extended solo that shines like gold. "Que Lindo Eso" is the only non-danceable (for some) track in the lot. It's really a exploration of the danzon with Palmieri on the keys painting his way thru a percussion rhythm played in Yambu. "Chocolate Ice Cream, written by Chocolate Armentero, has got to be the sexiest cha cha cha I have ever heard. Set to a slow jazz swing, Palmieri and Chocolate take turns improvising thru an masterpiece of a tune. We finally get to the last track, "17.1" a smoker of a guaguanco/descarga, in this tune everyone gets a turn to stretch out but Manny Oquendo is the man of the hour on timbales. A school lesson for all timbaleros new and old. Super Imposition, a cd of raw energy, focused and in heat. In short, this is my all time favorite Palmieri recording, and yours also, once you run out and buy it. 1 Se Acabo la Malanga 2 Pa' Huele 3 Bilongo 4 Que Lindo Eso, Eh! 5 Chocolate Ice Cream 6 17.1 Eddie Palmieri Piano Manny Oquendo Bongos, Timbales Nicky Marrero Timbales Eladio Perez Conga Rudy Calzado Percussion Andy Gonzalez Bass Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros Trumpet Lewis Kahn Trombone Jose Rodriguez Trombone José Luis Morales Rodriguez Trombone Ismael Quintana Vocals Elliot Romero Coro Arturo Campa Coro Justo Betancourt Coro " Eddie Stretching Out!! R. Derieux | Ann Arbor, MI | 03/24/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "Eddie has moved it more of his jazz/latin-jazz thing in this record but it still has some great traditional latin tracks (all classics): La Malanga, Bilongo y Pa'Huele. The last 3 tracks are instrumental but still really swing. The one thing I do not agree with from the prior review is that there is only one danceable tune. I think everythin here will get your feet moving and @ss shacking!! If you like this also check out Eddie's "Vamonos Pa'l Monte" and maybe the Sing Sing set. Fromn another great group look for Grupo Folklorico y Experimental Nuevayorquino: "Concepts in Unity" and "Lo Dice Todo"." Yet another Eddie Palmieri masterpiece. Justo Roteta | Los Angeles, California United States | 08/25/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "Like most of Eddie's Tico releases, this album is revered and loved by many salsa musicians. Eddie Palmieri's Conjunto La Perfecta was quite simly one of the greatest salsa bands of all time and Ismael Quintana was also a superb sonero. By itself, his rendition of the much-covered "Bilongo" is worth the entire CD's price."
