CD ReviewsPuerto Rico's Bass Virtuoso! MusicFreak | FL | 11/18/2002 (5 out of 5 stars) "In 1993 I started developing an interest in Jazz, especially bass players, because I was starting out on electric bass. I did not know who Eddie Gomez was, but I went to the Heineken Jazzfest, and when he started playing, I was swept off the floor! I think they had to bring someone over to clean the floor, because I was drooling!! This man was playing in perfect unison with the sax some incredibly complex bebop melodies, moving his fingering hand up and down the acoustic bass with his eyes closed and not missing a note!! Eddie is from the Scott Lafaro school. Lafaro was the bassist Eddie "replaced" in pianist Bill Evans' trio. What this means is that he is not a straight time keeper. He interacts very actively with the soloist at all times, using double stops, long notes, syncopation and melodic phrases all throughout a tune, and not the usual straight walking bass style. I was not aware that the bass could be played like that. Needless to say, the very next day I ran out and bought this cd. Ten years later, it is still one of my most treasured albums. Hear it and experience Puerto Rico's Acoustic Bass virtuoso. This cd is filled with great playing by all, especially drummer Lenny White and pianist Chick Corea, and Eddie's compositions are simply beautiful. Eddie is thankfully still alive and still making great music. Thanks, Eddie." A great and relaxing experience!
