"Think of Frank McComb doing Brazilian music along the lines of Jobim or Gilberto (and with a lot more jazz than soul thrown in), or maybe Incognito gone Latin, and you'll have an idea of what Ed Motta is all about here. This is my first Ed Motta CD and while I accept that it's entirely possible that he may have done better elsewhere, for me, this one is brilliant. I simply cannot get enough of it. Motta mostly scats but on the odd occasion where he does sing, even though I cannot understand a word he's saying, his warm voice is so beautiful, I simply do not care. I will be getting all his other albums now and I say many thanks to my best bud Joe, for bringing him to my attention.
I'm unable to give any further details as the inner-sleeve notes are all in Portuguese but there is a full jazz band here - piano, trumpet, tenor sax, Fender Rhodes, guitar and the like, all provide interesting backup and some very exciting solos - and at one point during the CD ("Abertura", "Na Rua" and "Canção Em Torno Dele") we even get some opera - though I guess the correct term would be "O Musical Medley" as it's called on the CD. What else could one possibly ask for?
I love this CD in its entirety but "A Charada" is my favourite tune of all. I wonder what it means..?"
