"If the idea of immersing yourself in an auditory recreation of natural surroundings appeals to you, then Gordon Hempton's CD's are best choice I know of. They offer high fidelity sound recorded by two microphones embedded in an artificial human head, no post-processing, careful selection for aesthetic interest and balance, and absolutely no intrusions from the "unnatural" world. You would be surprised how many "sounds of nature" CD's are badly made - two of the fourteen that I own turned out to have audible highway traffic rumble in the background! But Hempton clearly made a fine craft out of creating his collection. I particularly like "Old Growth" with its variations on subtle bird and water sounds, but that's just my taste. Which one of his CD's you should start with depends on what content appeals to you."
