"Hey, guys, is 13 a lucky number, a dangerous one-or both? How about thirteen burned-to-a-crisp songs from a woman who sizzles right from the start with comments like this: "I put the wild in the Wild Wild West
I'm trouble; the devil's scared to death of me
I'm a handful of woman
And I'm Trouble with a capital T."Never has an album been more appropriately titled, because E.G. Kight means what she sings: she's as sassy, classy, and brassy as they come, and this lady has the angles covered like a champion pool player. A smoky voice that can ignite a fireplace on command isn't her only gift; she snarls like an angry cougar when her man does her wrong-so that means, men, that we pay attention here, and don't even dream of trying to compromise her. They say the best man for the job is a woman-and E.G. is here prove it. Yes, she can be as sweet as honey-but baby, you can get stung to death if you step out of line.She's also got a royal court to attend her: Koko Taylor, The Queen bee herself, joins her in a scorching duet as they hammer out the truth about how "A Woman Can Tell" when her man's been cheating. We're talking tenaciously tough here; there's no way to argue against either of these ladies. That kind of "I-know-what-I-want" confidence is both sexy and defiant in the hands (and words) of E.G., and that means a woman can wait for the best. You know this kind of confidence means she's holding her ground and declaring independence ("Better Off With the Blues"; and "It Takes a Mighty Good Man" with special guest Kim Forester) when it's time to cut loose a bad relationship, putting her marker on a "got my eye on you!" fellow like Chris Hicks on "Your Love Looks Good on Me" or the swingin' finger-snapping jazz-jive "First in Line." This is a woman who says "I want to be first in line when you lose that gal you've got!" That's Paul Hornsby on piano, sweating for her attention-and with that red and black cover photo, you can't blame Paul (or any other man) for wanting to curry favors from this firecracker. Earn it or burn it, she says! I smell smoke-and I think it's because E.G.'s got me on the grill. Wow-and they say that Hades is hot? Not even close when she's doing the cooking and you're on the menu!A woman with this much passion feels her losses in ways that words can't show, and when the time is right, "Let the Healing Begin." Don't rush it...let the moment linger, because closeness is the cure. However, sometimes things just can't be mended, and that unfaithful fool gets the axe in the neck in "The Rooster Song." Hey, E.G. could have whipped out a pocketknife and...would rather settle for a chance to whittle down time in "Blue Dawn" and just let her lesson soak into her aching soul. You still can't catch her off guard, because she wraps up her testimony with a marrow-shaking version of "When a Man Loves a Woman." What we have here is a no-nonsense shoot-you-with-deadly-arrows Cleopatra-this is like having the bull beat the matador each time. By the way, E.G. does have a gentle side: she can pick guitar like a summer shower ("Better Off With the Blues") and she has a 17-year-old marksman on electric lead and slide in Michael Pierce. Just remember that her mirror on the wall sees into your soul-so keep her as the only picture in your heart-or else. (I've thrown her mine already... 'Have I Got the Blues for You' and 'Come into the Blues.' It's the wisest-and most sensible thing to do to please a woman like E.G. At least, for a start."

"I had never heard of E.G. Kight before, but when I heard one of her songs on CKUA radio in Alberta, I was blown away by the power of her voice. She deserves to be played much more. A fabulous blues singer!!"
