"At last count I had 34 CDs of the New World Symphony, and I liked all of them. I realize this fact is indicative of someone who has serious problems, but I don't think it disqualifies me from reviewing one of the CDs. Libor Pesek's second, Liverpool recording of the work is just about as good as they come. The sonority of the orchestra is appropriately dark, with beautiful ensemble and excellent discipline. The first chair players are appropriately lyrical when required, although they don't make the big sounds of players in the better known international orchestras. Pesek pays terrific attention to balances and phrasing. Nothing ever sounds awkward or not thought through. And there is excitement when required. The sound engineering is warm and full, in general very agreeable. The American Suite is an excellent makeweight, engaging and tuneful. My first acquaintance with it was on a Michael Tilson Thomas LP, but I think Pesek's performance is better. Now if I can just get around to listening to my other 33 CDs of the symphony."
