CD Reviews

Best modern recordings of the first 4 symphonies.
J. K. Davis MD | Cleveland, Ohio | 06/20/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There are dozens of excellent recordings of Dvorak's symphonies 7-9, and a fair number of outstanding 6ths (Mackerras) and 5ths (Rowicki, Suitner). The first four symphonies, which came to light years after his death (the 9th was counted as No.5 until the early 1960's)require determined advocacy by the conductor and orchestra

to make them recognizable as the works of a great composer. Anguelov certainly gets to the heart of Dvorak and accomplishes that. The 1st, "Bells of Zinoviev" is cut extensively, as are all but one or two performances I have heard, but I don't think the (un-cut over 50 minute) original is diminished, but is rather enhanced by the editing. Even the 3rd, to me the 'ugly duckling' of Dvorak's symphonies is appealing

in this set, and the sound quality is far superior to the 1960's recordings by Kertesz, Rowick, Kubelik etc. I think this is a great foundation to a Dvorak collection, and if you add some extra performances of the last three symphonies, the tone poems (Mackerras, Harnoncourt) the Legends (Fischer)and the violin, cello and piano concertos, you'll have a wonderful overview of one of the truly great late romantic composers."

"I was given this set as a gift and it has brought me a lot of joy. As Dvorak's huge fan I cannot resist the temptation of possessing more then one recording of the same opus.

You may be interested in this set mainly for the early (1-6) symphonies which are extraordinarily beautiful opuses yet performed very rarely and much less sought as landmark performances by the world most famous orchestra's and conductors (unlike the 8th and 9th are).

Well, Anguelov is quite living up to my expectations. In particular the Symphony No. 1 is beautifully performed and I would wager to compare it to the Kertesz's recording from sixties, maybe even better. The overall sound is very good (well, the set was recorded in the new millenium, so one would expect that - the more amazing is Kertesz's sound in recordings from 1960's!). Listen to the 1st symphony and its 3rd movement - and you will enjoy Dvorak to the fullest ...

I hesitate to recommend this set over the mentioned Kertesz's recording. There are other very good sets with Dvorak's early symphonies (e.g. Rowicki).

Overall opinion: if you are a Dvorak fan, go for this contemporary recording. It is a fine one, fine orchestra and fine conductor. And the music per se is ... you know it, damn: that's why you are a Dvorak fan!"
