CD Reviews

Nice package, particularly if the price is right
Nikica Gilic | Zagreb, Croatia | 05/18/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"To put it bluntly, I think there's only one Ellington masterpiece in this box - jazz violin session with Stephane Grappelli (violin) and Svend Asmussen (viola) joining the Ellington's standard fiddler on the burning roof - Ray Nance. With the swinging rhythm session of Duke, wild Ernie Shepard and Some Woodyard, plus few back-up horns on some tracks and Billy Strayhorn joining in occasionaly, this couldn't really go wrong...

The "Mary Poppins" album is, however, close enough to the Ellington's big band peaks, with Duke and his soul brother Strayhorn really working out fresh and interesting arrangements, with making the soloists deliver the most they are able at the time (and many of them are more than able)... The rest of the package is, basically, Ellington's orchestra playing songs from other big bands repertoire ("Will the big bands ever come back?" album) and contemporary songs (the "'65" and "'66" album) - which is also kinda nice and kinda dukish, although at times a bit too easy on the ears...

Well, if you find it at the right price, this is a nice package, swinging and sufficiently diverse for Ellington fans (like myself) and Ellington beginners... The latter group might even enjoy it more than the former...."
