A good example of a band that can really, really scare you

"Each Drowningman release that I have heard has been two things; distinctively Drowningman, but also fiercely original. They are, however, clearly a band that some casual listener could hear and go 'Bloddy Hell, it all sounds the same!'. I am not a casual listener, and Drwoningman rock my decrepit little world. This release surprised me when I heard it at first. It isn't quite as agressive as their previous release, the mammoth 'Rock & Roll Killing Machine' album, but it is yet another turn in a band which is about as easy to predict as your own death. This release features the most passionate vocals by Simon Brody that I've heard on a release of their's yet, and it also features some really, really cool and unexpected moments too. They still swing into their unplacable, but strangely familiar sounding 'sing-y' bits, but this time round they seem to be a bit more diverse. There was something about 'Rock & Roll Killing Machine' that was fundamentally metal, but there is something about this release that is fundamentally... unplacable. It is a band at the peak of their originality. The inclusion of the track 'Weighted and Weighed Down', (which was originally released on their debut 7" EP for Hydrahead,) is interesting because 1997 was a long time ago, and it really is a good opportunity to see how a band like this has developed. The song fits in fine with the rest of the tracks, but it also stands out as something earlier and, dare I say it, primitive. You just have to compare it to the best track on this EP (in my opinion, anyway) 'Surveilance Footage Highlights', to see clearly how this, or any band, can mature musically."

"If your expecting this to be as nuts as Busy Signal... forget it! It's not like it's bad or nothing but don't go buying this with the wrong intentions, it's still intesnse, but it's not as screamy and it's more straightforward than their other releases (I don't know about thier new joint yet... I hope it's good though!). So don't expect so as many twists and turns as a "Choose Your Own Adventure Book" (oh an analogy!) but do expect some goodness. Drowningman, that's a name you can trust."
