Gaetano Donizetti wrote Olivo e Pasquale during a five month stay in Rome, at the age of 29 years. In this time he was courting Virginia Vasselli, the eighteen year old sister of his best friend Antonio (he married her in 1828). It cannot be excluded that Donizetti found it hard to concentrate in his work and was lost in dreams, a point that would explain a lot of dreamy passages in this opera.
