Donizetti's Don Pasquale is one of the most famous of all Italian comic operas, often considered second only to Rossini's The Barber of Seville. This 1988 recording features a seasoned, stylistically secure cast and outstanding conductor of this repertoire. It is being reissued by popular demand. Soprano Luciana Serra, born in 1946, was considered one of the most agile coloraturas after Joan Sutherland, but this incredible virtuoso was little known outside of Italy. The title role was a specialty of bass Enzo Dara. With his extraordinary stage presence, he made a name for himself all over the world as a comic bass of great taste and a clear sense of style, especially in comic operas such as Don Pasquale.
