CD Reviews

Gentle giant's music from 1989 to 1992
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 02/21/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Most of the songs that Don Williams is famous for date from the seventies and early eighties - classics such as You're my best friend, Till the rivers all run dry, Some broken hearts never mend, Tulsa time, I believe in you and Lord I hope this day is good, all of which went to number one on the American charts. And we must not forget I recall a gypsy woman, a British top twenty pop hit that was never released as a single in America. All those tracks can found on other compilation. This album contains his music from a more recent time, still very similar in style to his earlier music.

Don recorded these albums for a label (RCA or Arista) that later became part of the BMG group. During this period, he had four top five country hits, three of which (True love, I've been loved by the best and Just as long as I have you) are included here. The fourth (Back in my younger days) is omitted, but that won't matter to the vast majority of British customers who buy this, since all the songs here are of a uniformly high quality.

Some fans may recognize Lone star state of mind (the title track of one of a Nanci Griffith album, which included the original version of From a distance) and Standing in the river dying of thirst (which can be found on a Kathy Mattea album, Lonesome standard time).

If you already have a collection of Don's classic songs (of which there are plenty to choose from) and you would like more of the same bit without duplicating the songs you already have, you'll love this."

"Don Williams is as smooth as ever with this album. His soft, melodius voice is always a pleasure to listen to whether you are alone or with someone you love. He never lets his fans down. Don - thanks again."

"Some of the songs in this album were new to me, but I have never heard a Don Williams tune that I didn't like. He is just the greatest. Country music has gotten to be too jazzy and 'frantic' for me; give me the old smoothies like DW any day of the week. He is about the only one I listen to these days. There will never be another one as good as he is."
